Red Wine Extract Vs. Red Wine: The Resveratrol Smackdown

Sundown Red Wine Extract with Resveratrol

Who knew there was a supplement called Red Wine Extract? I didn’t. Red wine, obviously, I’m familiar with … but red wine extract? Not so much.

Don’t tell anyone, but Kat and I guzzle red wine like there’s no tomorrow. Or, rather, we would if it were cheaper. A $12 bottle of red wine may last us a couple of evenings … maybe one or two precious afternoons … then it’s gone. We own a lovely vintage wine rack, made of pewter, which sits on the floor perpetually empty. It’s gotten to the point where we’ve engaged in serious talks about what to do about our wine consumption. We’ve even considered (briefly) joining a wine club. Of course, there’s also the question of buying red wine in bulk, by the case. It makes sense. We just haven’t done so yet — after all, it’s a big commitment.

Interestingly, Kat and I drink red wine for different reasons. She loves the connoisseurship and taste and sipping-for-pleasure aspects, whereas I drink the purple stuff mostly for its health benefits. I won’t go into all the hype about resveratrol or the antioxidant potency of grapes; it’s probably safe to assume that you’re aware of said properties. Anyway, since those are the ‘thrills’ I seek, I’d just as soon chug a slutty jug wine or a florid box wine or even a syrupy Kosher wine. Wine, schwine, what’s the difference? But the fact remains that all red wine — if consumed in great quantities — is expensive.

Perhaps that’s what led me today to purchase my first bottle of red wine extract capsules. Even though I barely knew how to evaluate the supplement or compare it to other products, the price tag of red wine extract ($9.99) trumped a bottle of wine, so I just bought it. This specific product — Sundown Naturals Red Wine Extract with Resveratrol — contains 200 mg of Red Wine Complex, along with a full day’s dose of Vitamin C in each capsule. The bottle provides 50 capsules, which is approximately a one-month supply of red wine extract at 1-2 capsules per day. So, in other words, it’s good for a 30-day trial.

I’ll begin taking the red wine extract capsules tomorrow and post a product review and evaluation next month. It’s still rather a mystery to me, at this point, but I’ve read and seen enthusiastic data on resveratrol — particularly the resveratrol supplements in capsule form. People say resveratrol makes them feel better, sleep better, look better. Blah, blah, blah. It’s dope. We’ll see. Whatever the results, I’ve already saved about $50, drawing the line on wine. Score: Dope 1, Wine 0. Red wine extract could be a contender. Let the smackdown begin!
