About Metro Cheapo

What is Metro Cheapo?

It’s a blog full of tips and hints for saving money in the urban environment. Written by a couple of thrifty New Yorkers — Kat and Shannon — Metro Cheapo tests money-saving theories and offers advice for getting cheap deals on everything from food to fashion. Whether you live in NYC or elsewhere, we explain how you can use any city’s resources to save time, money and sanity.

Metro Cheapo realizes that you live in the city for a reason: you love going out with friends, shopping, visiting cultural institutions and enjoying unique activities that the metropolis puts at your fingertips.

Residing in a city, however, means that a lot of the tried-and-true methods for living on the cheap don’t apply. You probably don’t have a car to visit yard sales every weekend. (Heck, you may not even have a yard.) Maybe you live too far from a Costco or similar discount warehouse that offers items in bulk. It would be nice to save money on groceries by growing your own produce and canning it for the winter, but not many apartment dwellers have the luxury of a vegetable garden.

Metro Cheapo seeks to get around these little obstacles by adapting time-tested Cheapo tips to the modern city lifestyle. We welcome tips and advice from our readers, too! (Don’t be shy.) Ultimately, we think frugal living is the mode of the future. Getting back to basics, encouraging resourcefulness and reducing the wastefulness of consumerism is what Metro Cheapo is all about.
